Chapter Nineteen

“And this,” Mr. Ripple said, peering at the Dustbuster on his desk, “was... I don't follow. Were you planning to tidy up a little while you were in there?”

“That was for trapping the ghost,” Simon replied, struggling to hold back tears.

“Why did you think that was going to trap her?” Christian asked, turning to him.

“I don't know,” he whimpered. “I just thought it might be useful. I thought if we could suck her in there, she wouldn't be able to get out and we'd be able to take her to show people.”

“How would she fit in that thing?” Christian replied. “She's too big.”

“I thought that if she's a ghost, she might be like a kind of gas.”

“Ghosts aren't made of gas,” Christian said, before furrowing his brow. “Are they?”

“Is it broken?” Simon whimpered. “My dad's going to be so angry if I broke it.”

“You boys are unbelievable,” Mr. Kepper said, shaking his head. He was standing with his arms folded across his chest as he leaned against the wall. “I've got to admit, you should probably get points for creativity. At least that's one positive to come out of this mess.”

“The fact that this whole farrago was quite obviously planned,” Mr. Ripple continued, “only makes it that much worse, I'm afraid. It would be one thing if you three had simply decided on a whim to give in to your curiosity, but you clearly spent some time coming up with a rather elaborate scheme.”

“And stealing my key,” Mr. Kepper said. “Don't forget that part.”

“I have not forgotten that part,” Mr. Ripple said sternly. “I take a very dim view of theft.”

“It was only when Kelly Williams told me that she'd seen Christian take the key,” Mr. Kepper continued, “that I realized something was afoot. And then Darren Clarke said he'd seen these three miscreants sneaking off behind the hut as soon as lunch break began. Once I had that information, it wasn't difficult to piece together an outline of what was afoot. You have to get up pretty early in the morning to sneak something past me, young men.”

“Quite,” Mr. Ripple muttered. “The question now is, how do we ensure that nothing like this ever happens again? Not only did you put yourselves in danger, gentlemen, but you also caused significant damage to school property.”

“It's going to get knocked down next week anyway,” Christian pointed out.

“That's not the point!” Mr. Kepper shouted, before sighing. “That's absolutely not the point, and you know it.”

“You boys could have been very seriously hurt,” Mr. Ripple pointed out. “Or worse.”

Simon finally started crying. His face was red and flushed, and tears dripped from his eyes as he lowered his head in shame.

“Blubbing won't help,” Mr. Kepper added, before taking a tissue from the desk and handing it to him. “You three have only got yourselves to blame for all this nonsense. Go on, wipe your eyes. No-one likes a crybaby.”
